How the 2026 World Cup Format Works
For the first time 48 teams compete at a World Cup. They are split into 12 groups of four, with every team playing three matches.
After the group stage:
- 1st and 2nd place in each group automatically qualify for the Round of 32 (24 teams)
- The 8 best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also advance (8 teams)
- 4th place and non-qualifying 3rd-place teams are eliminated
